STRABAG International GmbH was awarded the contract for rehabilitation and extension of the Bus Rapid Transit Infrastructure (BRT = a surface metro system that uses bus technology to provide metro-like services) in the capital of Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam, with a contract value of EUR 179.6 million. The works comprised the rehabilitation and extension of three trunk roads with a total length of 21.1 km.
The contract was part of the „Second Central Transport Corridor Project“, the purpose of which was to support Tanzania’s economic growth by providing enhanced transport facilities. Its main components are the Dar Es Salaam urban transport system, the trunk roads and Zanzibar Airport.
The works in Package 1 were implemented under two lots. Lot 1 contained the rehabilitation and extension of the road from Magomeni to Kimara including 15 bus stations, the Kimara Terminal and the Ubongo Terminal. Lot 2 comprised the route from Magomeni to Kivukoni as well as the Kawawa Road from Magomeni to Morocco and the Msimbazi Road from Fire to Kariakoo including 14 bus stations and the Morocco Terminal as well as the widening of a brigde. The tender provided the construction of one axial concrete paved carriageway for each direction serving exclusively for bus transport. The existing road was widened in order to keep the mixed traffic lanes and to include the new cycle routes and walkways. Within the roadway each 500 – 700 m bus stations had to be built, the terminals Kimara, Ubungo and Morocco had to be enlarged. Additionally, infrastructural works like drinking water supply, sewerage system and telecommunication system as well as street lighting and traffic signs were provided.
